This book captivated me. The written prose painted a rich tapestry of words. The vivid illustrations are an integral part of the story.

This paragraph is a great example of the word paintings in the book.

"Now that they had gathered the white light of morning and the red light of evening, Mother Bear and Lump Lump had to wait until it rained so they could catch the falling rain. But each morning when Lump Lump poked his head out of the den, the ground was spotted with early light. And each night after Blue Bird finished telling stories and Lump Lump lay nice and snug next to Mother Bear in the den, all he heard was the click-click of the branches and the soft rustle of the autumn leaves."

I appreciated the information that the author provided about who she worked with to make this book accurate.
- Barbara Teller Ornelas, 6th generation Navajo weaver.
- Cathy Notarnicola, Curator Museum of Indian Arts and Culture.
- Dr Paul Apodaca, Associate Professor of Sociology and American Studies at Chapman University
- Darrell and Lorna Smith, longtime biologists and carnivore specialists

As a librarian I believe this book will be a favorite of my students.

These two companion books blew my socks off. The first book uses the alphabet to tell the Chickasaw story, in a very concise way. I really liked that the author not only include the "Old Time" history, but included "contemporary" history and the people involved. The author shows that the Chickasaw culture is a living and growing culture.

Contents:

History told via the alphabet.

Glossary (English and Chickasaw)

Activity and Discussion Questions.

I think using the two books together will provide the reader with many opportunities to learn about the Chickasaw nation.

Back decades into the last century when I was a young Society." I asked my older sister what the John Burch Society was? I remember she was quiet for a long time. Then she said: "You know how Dad is about the flag and stuff?"

"Yeh", I said.

"The John Burch Society is about 100 times more than Dad about the flag."

"OHHHHH", I said.

Fast forward many years. I was attending a grant writing seminar. One of the participants was a Lakota man from South Dakota. During a conversation I said the phrase, "They Jewed him down."

He looked at me, I saw him weighing his words before he responded.

"Where did you grow up?"

"Southern Idaho"

"Hmm"

"May I tell you a story?"

"Yes".

"Some years back I was part of a committee working on a project. We were to receive a major grant to finish funding the project. Three of the funders came out to our reservation to look at the paperwork and sign the final documents so we could move forward.

One of our tribal members had been working hard on the budget and many of the line items were coming in under budget.

The three visitors looked over all the papers we had submitted. Finally one funder addressed us."

"You originally asked for X-dollars. I notice the actual amount in this final report is much less. How did you do that?"

My friend answered, "I jewed that company down. Saved us a bunch of money."

The funder looked at my friend, then he looked at the other two funders. They looked back. They put their papers back into their brief cases. Latched them, stood up and walked out the door without saying anything.

Five million dollars walked out with them. Three years of planning poof it was gone."

He waited patiently as I processed this story. I am sure if I would have been drawn in a comic strip a light bulb would have been hanging above my head.

"Ohh, jewed Jewish. Oh my lands I never made the connection".

He looked at me and said, "Every time you say it remember my story."

I worked hard to remove this epitaph from my vocabulary. This word I had heard often from my father but never new the meaning the racial slur that it was.

There are so many of these racially deplorable words peppered in our vocabulary. Think of the word "gyp - to cheat or swindle". Where does it come from?

Some words come with their own baggage.

Eastern Montana has been home to Native American tribes and homesteaders. The land is arrid. Water is life. Who were the people who lived and struggled here? Tough, no nonsense, self-reliant, determined people. Even as there was conflict between the tribes and the unwanted immigrants (homesteaders). The land fought its own battle for dominance, it demanded respect.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">History is one of my passions. I served 24 years in the Montana National Guard. My country and the Constitution are my passions. I have been a librarian for over two decades. Teaching is my passion.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A few years ago I was asked to create a unit on Hazel Hunkins, a suffragist from Billings, Montana. As I researched I learned about the women who were part of the suffrage movement. I learned about the marches, the pickets, the arrests, the forced feeding. Never the less they persisted.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Many of us never heard their stories. We didn't hear the stories of the men who supported them and helped work for the vote. I think we need to hear their stories of perseverance.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Being part of a democracy gives us many rights. With these rights comes responsibilities. I believe being an informed constituent is one of those responsibilities. Most of us have many commitments and little time. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I believe being informed is a critical part of democracy.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I also believe that my elected officials have a responsibility to listen to their constituents. Sadly in my state of Montana, Senator Daines' phones were not working well in February. Even some of his offices were locked and constituents could not talk to him face to face. Its hard to comprehend how this could happen. And the stories go on and on.
The theme for Montana's National History Day this year is "Taking A Stand in History". As I ponder this quote I think of all the women who fought for suffrage. People like Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul, Hazel Hunkins, a Billings, MT suffragist. And men and women like you and me. They took a stand.

Yes I said "men", I wasn't muttering. One organization was the "Men's League for Women's Suffrage". Wellington Rankin was a member of Montana's League for Women's Suffrage. (Clue he had an older sister named Jeanette.) He took a stand.

The James Madison award is given each year to the individual or group, who have championed, protected and promoted public access to government information and the public's right to know at the national level. The award is given by the American Library Association. Yesterday they announced the 2017 winner - Montana Senator Jon Tester. He will receive the award March 15, 2017 at the Newseum in Washington, DC.

Senator Tester took a stand.

Tell me about a person you believe took a stand.
I and 39 other 4-Hers (all teenagers) boarded a chartered Greyhound bus in Lewiston, Idaho. We were going to attend the 4-H Club Congress in Washington DC. It was the summer of 1973 and I was fifteen years old. Three adults were on the trip; the bus driver, and two chaperones sadly I don't remember their names.

We were gone a month. One week to get there. One week attending 4-H Club Congress. One week to get home.

Today I would not take 40 teenagers across town with just two chaperones, let alone a three week trip staying in motels. We ranged in ages of 15-19. We stopped at most of the historic spots.

We went through Butte, saw them mining the Berkeley Pit. Stopped at "Custer's Battlefield". Stopped at Mount Rushmore. Went to the Science Museum in Chicago. Drove on the edge of a tornado for several hours.

We rotated chores each night cleaning the bus and preparing for the next days trip. I could not reach the windshield. So when it was my turn I washed and dried the headlights.

I remember going to Williamsburg and eating Peanut Soup and Cornish Hens. Seeing Monticello and Gettysburg.

Our week in DC was about learning and experiences. Our chaperones and leaders had organized our trip before we left. We attended a live performance of "Jesus Christ Super Star" at the Ford Theater. Saw the National Zoo. Saw white Bengal tigers, Smokey the Bear, the pandas from China Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing. We went to the Smithsonian saw the 1st Ladies gowns, and the Hope Diamond.

These are some of the memories that still dance in my heart and soul.
This fall Mrs W our secretary suggested a surprise birthday party for her 88th birthday. All 297 students made her a birthday card. It was great! She dreams of the future.

Lauri is my friend - she has been my library volunteer for over 10 years and two school moves. A few years ago is gave our library a collection of Goosebumps. Her adult son said it was ok to give his childhood collection to us. Last week one of the books fell apart. I had already used a ton of tape on it. I showed her it had been checked out 77 times. She encourages dreamers.

Karin is my friend. She is a retired librarian. I worked with her the year before she retired. She has been my library volunteer for two years and in two schools. She has helped me catalog our new books and weed the collection. She has helped me pack up my library two years in a row (all the books). She then helped me unpack them.

Trish is my friend. She is a retired librarian. She is loyal. She says what she thinks. She scolds me and then supports my dreams. I have only to say I need your help and she's there.

Audrey is my friend. She too is a retired librarian. She has listened to me cry. She has encouraged me. She has believed in me. And she too, helped me pack my library twice in two years, every book.

Kelli is my friend. Yes she is a retired librarian. She taught English and then joined the library ranks. I was a 2nd year librarian and they made me her mentor. LOL. I told her straight out I was learning and we would figure it out together. She taught me so much. She laughs with me and makes me answer my own questions.

Mrs W is my friend. She is our secretary. She drives by my house on her way to work. Tuesday there were emergency vehicles near my home. She called to check on Dan and I. I was very touched. My elderly neighbor is still in the hospital.

These are some of my many wonderful friends. They are ones to ride the river with!

Three sets of bobbing balloons decorate this month's table. Each month birthday staff are recognized during a monthly potluck. Decorations and small gifts change depending on the folks who are hosting the luncheon.

Friday, our secretary Mrs W reminded me to take my balloons. I decided to leave them in my room so I could enjoy them while they stayed aloft.

Monday, I came through the doors and Mrs W pointed to the balloons sitting on the counter. I looked at the gentle swaying balloons as she said "Don't forget your balloons."

"I put them in my room Friday."

Mrs W. "I know."

Me: "So why are they here this morning?"

Mrs W: "They set off the motion detector and set off the alarm. I figured it out the 2nd time and put them in the vault."

My beautiful bobbing balloons accompanied me to the library. After school I took them home and put them in the living room.

My two dogs were not impressed. Baby stood by my chair facing these gently bobbing interlopers. She growled her warning that if they came closer they would deal with her. Eventually she laid down but kept them in sight.

Tank, (our Scooby Doo), would move in for a closer look at the gently bobbing balloons. Then he would notice a shadow or slight movement and off he would run. Returning to check them out again.

Beautiful bobbing birthday balloons.

Dan's sister gave me this recipe that had been her Mother's recipe.

Dolly's Green Tomato Relish

6 pints green tomatoes
3 pints of ground cabbage
3 onions ground
1/2 cup salt, stir into mixture soak overnight. Drain well.

3 pints vinegar (white)
3 pints sugar
1/2 cup mustard seed (It was cheaper to buy bulk at the Health Store.)
1 tsp clove
1 tsp cinnamon

Mix together pour over tomato mixture. Cook for 1/2 hour.

Seal in water bath for 10 minutes. Makes approximately 14 pints.
My Mom's friend Georgine gave this recipe to my Mom about 1967. I can remember Mom making it. Seeing it drain. Hearing the jars pop.

Tomato Relish

Step 1

14 lbs ripe tomatoes - Skald and skim

6 green peppers chopped no seeds

6 red peppers chopped no seeds

3 hot peppers chopped no seeds

(Put all in food grinder)

8 large onions chopped fine

3/4 very scant cup of salt

Step 2: Hang in bag over night.

Step 3: In morning taste drippings if too salty add water in bag to drip.

Step 4: Heat together

5 cups sugar

5 cups vinegar (prefer cider vinegar)

then add

3 oz mustard seed

Mix well, then add to first mixture above. Stir for awhile. Seal hot.

*We got it to salty once and we added a cup of cold water and let it drain and it was alright. Try tasting the juice.

Zortman is a small community in North Central Montana. It is a historic mining community, and a living ghost town. Many of the residents left when the mine shut down in 1997. The remaining residents have grit and endurance.

Zortman and the nearby community of Landusky were named after the original miners, who found gold on the Fort Belknap Reservation in the late 1800's. In 1895 the tribes faced starvation and signed the Grinnell Agreement, selling the gold laden land to the US government. The Zortman-Landusky Mine was the first cyanide heap-leach gold mine in the US. The Pegasus mine closed in 1997.
Environmental issues such as cyanide spills, and other violations bring legal action.
Zortman is listed as a ghost town. I think of it as a functioning ghost town. It sports the Buckhorn store; US Post Office; The Miners Club Bar and Cafe; Zortman Garage and Motel; and RV Park and has an active religious community.

The Zortman Garage and Motel is owned by John and Candy Kalal. We met Candy Friday night when we checked in. The motel is clean and cozy. In front of the motel you will find many chairs and small tables. It reminded me of the old verandas where folks gathered to visit. Like many rural Montana communities cell coverage and internet service is temperamental. I soon realized I could get signal outside my room. So I took my computer and went and enjoyed the autumn sunshine.

Folks working and staying at the motel would stop and say hello. I enjoyed catching the conversations taking place as people worked and visited. I felt welcomed and included in their friendly banter.

My husband and another couple went riding their ATV's up the mountain. That afternoon I headed for the Charles M Russell National Wildlife Refuge to watch the elk at Slippery Ann.

I was there about an hour went I decided to head back to the motel (about 25 miles). I headed up the road and found a turn around and headed back to Zortman. As I headed down the hill I met Mike and his wife in their Duely.

Mike said, "We left Danny at the Motel he had a Crash, but he's ok."

More conversation and I headed back quite concerned.

As I drove I replayed the morning conversations that I had overheard. Somewhere I thought someone said something about being a nurse. When I arrived back at the motel I saw Cindy and asked if she was the nurse.

"No, but there is an EMT."

I told her Dan had rolled his ATV. My husband was a bit surprised as a roomful of people descended on him. He was under the covers, "bare assed naked". I quickly explained that there was an EMT and I wanted them to take a look at him.

Even though everyone firmly suggested getting checked out at the hospital in Malta I could not convince him to go. Mike and his wife, Candy and her husband and many others stopped to check on Dan and see what he needed. Candy brought him Tiger Balm and John brought him ice. Many people stopped introduced themselves and then asked if there was anything we needed. The next morning we met a few more folks. It was amazing the sense of community that was at the little motel.

Dan said, "the 4 wheeler "rared up" and went - end over end - as I went off the side. "

Dan told me he wend end over end a few times. Felt his head hit the rocks as he rolled over, and remembered feeling the rocks dig into his side.

When the dust settled the 4 wheeler was at the bottom and he was on the side of the mountain.
He had jumped off his four wheeler as it somersaulted down the steep mountain. He drove his ATV back to the motel. It looked a little bent and beaten up. Mostly it looked sad.
When I examined him he sported some scrapes and cuts and did not appear to have any broken bones. Thankfully he has a hard head.
Sometimes my coworkers make me shake my head. My crystal ball has been a little cloudy lately. I didn't see this coming.

Earlier this year our school counselor and I spoke. I asked her if she had any books that she wanted in the library.

"Yes", she did.

"Send me your list."

"Yes, I will."

Fast forward to today. I took the secretary a copy of my last book order.

"Here is what I spent. It is the last one for the year."

The counselor was standing by the secretary's desk.

The counselor, "Remember when we talked about the books I wanted for the library?"

"Yes."

"Can you order them?"

Shaking my head, "I just finished spending this year's budget."

"Oh never mind then."

"If you send me your list I will put it on next year's order."

"Yes, I will."

I was reading Missives from Missouri's post about a wrong number. My mind began to recall wrong number calls over the years. One of those calls stands out in my mind even though it happened a quarter of a century ago.

I was home from college and it was about 9:30 at night. The phone rang. I answered it. The lady on the other end said, "I need help, I've fallen and I can't get up."

I tried to ask her name and her voice began to fade. I quickly refocused and asked her where she was.

Her response, "I'm at my house."

Worry and frustration made me firmly ask her for her address. Was there a family member or neighbor I could call?

"No. I'm all alone."

"Can't you come?"

"How will I get in?"

"Oh I never lock the back door."

Then I hear the phone fall.

We lived in a small town. I quickly found the house and went in. Calling to her as I entered the house. I found her laying on the floor near the bed. I realized that I couldn't lift her by myself. So she told me to call the fire station.

While we waited, I asked her who she had been calling when she got me.

"I was calling my minister. But I couldn't misdialed the number."

The EMTs at the local firehouse came. They knew her. She had called them before. Gently they lifted her into bed. Wished her a good-night as they left.

I have often thought of her and the night she called the wrong number.

I recently saw these three lines in a card game. How could I use them in a poem? A character sketch.

The devil himself.
Children on leashes
Dark and mysterious forces beyond our control

Here is my lead.

Devil
Demonic deeds
Discouraging, deadly, depraved
Dark and mysterious force
Diabolical.

There was an older blue Ford with out of state plates parked at the edged of the playground. The man sat watching, occasionally his phone could be seen in his hands.

Children running back and forth, swinging, laughing.

His eyes followed. Orbs so dark I felt entombed when he looked at me. The stench of animal decay seemed to ooze out of the open window. Hurrying my mind tried to brush away fetid breath of the soulless one.

Memories of another time shifted around me. Screams of despair linger and cling to me. Who will dance with the devil tonight?
I admit I was unabashedly eavesdropping in the grocery store today. I was coming down an aisle when I noticed a a family vignette, Papa, 4 year old brother, and sister (probably a 1st grader). Sister was sitting in the cart.

Sister: "I don't like the ones with peanut butter."

Brother - grabbing a bunny and putting it in the cart.

Sister - "No that one has peanut butter."

Papa retrieves the box and puts it back on the shelf.

Brother has moved on to another box. In it goes into the cart.

Sister reads the box and says, " No that one has peanut butter."

Papa picks a bunny from the shelf reads the labels and checks the sale price while retrieving the bunny in the basket.

Brother chooses a different colored box puts it in the basket. Sister again sees the offending peanut butter on the box. Sister again vetoes it.

Brother says. "How do I know what it says?"

Papa takes the box and shows him the picture of a jar of peanut butter.

Then says "This one is for dipping it would work."

Sister firmly states, "I don't want the ones with peanut butter. I want one of the others."

Papa tiring a bit says, "Well what do you expect when your 4 year old brother tries to shop for his sister."

Brother chooses another, Papa grabs it before it reaches the basket.

Papa: "Buddy, this one has Crispies in it. You don't like these."

Again the rabbit goes back on the shelf. Papa is reading the sizes and prices and finally finds what he is looking for. Success in the basket goes the bunnies!

Papa is beaming on having achieved a victory!

I am trying very hard to keep a straight face as I watch the comedy routine. I am about to leave when the play continues.

Papa, "Now we need to get some for the neighbors."

Brother "Lets get them the same ones we got."

Papa, "I'm not spending that much money on the neighbors that I'm spending on you."

Brother watches as Papa chooses some large bunnies from the shelf and in the cart they go.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the performance, I tell him how impressed I was with how he handled the whole shopping experience. From the corner of my eye I notice brother putting another bunny in the cart.
