Bloomfield Montana 59315

Bloomfield, Montana is a small agriculture community.  There are a couple of houses, a school and the Post Office.  Notice that a home is attached to the right side of this Post Office.

The last census said there were 200 people in the extended community.  The town is about 23 miles from Glendive, Montana and about 70 miles from Sydney, Montana.  And that distance is on paved roads!   The 2010-2011 enrollment for the school was 8 students.

This hay bale was sitting on the playground.  The side windows are photographs encased in plastic.  I assume they are of the current students.  The driver is also a photograph - my guess it is their teacher.  I thought this was a clever display.

One room schools are alive and well in Montana.

  1. I love that you're doing all these post offices. There's got to be a Montana book in there somewhere! You are literally writing such sweet history of your state. I believe it would be such a pleasure to teach at that school. The hay bale bus is a delight!

  2. I have a soft spot in my heart for one room schools. My Mom taught in the one room schools her in Montana. It takes a special person to work in isolation with few resources.

The Bloomfield Post Office was first established in 1907.

  3. It must be like travelling back in time to attend this small school. I wonder at the life stories of the residents in this town....

  5. Hello, I just stumbled upon this and my Great Aunt and Uncle actually have lived in that house connected to the post office with my aunt working there for the past 17 years. I actually just got back from visiting them. My great great grandfather moved out to Bloomfield Montana when the government was giving away 600 acres for free and another 600 acres if you were willing to farm it. My grandfather and his 6 siblings all attended that one room school house until moving to Indiana were most of my family now lives.
